Subject: Re: Hardware Handshaking
Hello Norm,
In a message Norm Goodger writes to Duncan Mcnutt:

Correct when the Carrier is lost you would hang up after a few milliseconds
(to make sure it is really gont). On the Macs that support pin 7 this is no
problem. But on those that don't a timeout is an acceptable workaround.
NG> No, I'm not confused. I do not agree that these pinouts are valid

Sorry, didn't want to step on your toes. But the pinouts are the recommended
way of having hardware handshake and CD. That you lose DTR isn't my fault.
NG> do not want to lose DTR, nor do you want to lose CD..you are trying to
You don't lose CD on those Macs that have pin 7 connected.

No I am not trying to justify HSK "no matter what" :-) An example, if you send
Arcmail (compressed mail) on a modern modem (V.42bis) you get an additional
compression of up to 30% but no less than 10%, add the addition 10% throughput
achived by using hardware handshake instead of XOn/XOff and you have an
appreciateble
savings.

NG> Name one source that builds a cable that supports use of the GPi pin?
NG> The HSK cable I think you are refering to does not support use of GPi.
Farallon, Hayes Microcomputer Products, Prometheus, Computer Friends, Global
Computer Supplies; ask for the "high speed" or for the "hardware handshake"
modem cable. US Robotics doesn't carry one, but if you ask for Robin Nastos
in technical support she will tell you where you can get one.
NG> I can get and have received 1600+CPS with compressed files, depending
That is about 10% slower than the average attainable throughput with proper
HSK cableing.
NG> on the compression method. The 3000CPS on large text files you state
NG> is impossible,
Try V.42, V.42bis connects and large textfiles.
Cheers,
Duncan (Big Mac) McNutt
